community service
Unless you're fortunate enough to be at the show at Madison Square Garden in NYC tonight, you are like me and most of the hip hop and cable-having world...we're tuned into the Jay-Z LIVE concert on Fuse right now.

The show is going down!  Hov is doing his thing.  John Mayer was rippin' the guitar solos, Pharrell is doing his collabo thing, Santigold represented...all is well for hip hop, Jigga and Roc Nation.  I think people are forgetting what this is all about:  100% of the proceeds from ticket sales and concert merchandise will go directly to the New York Police and Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund.

Community service is an important aspect of maintaining and sustaining our communities.  I have been a volunteer since I was young.  My parents instilled in me the importance of helping the less fortunate, to be grateful for my middle-class life, to be aware of what is going on in the world around me...and most importantly to value my time and spend it wisely.  From clothing & toy drives, to Girl Scouts, to tutoring kids in Math after-school at the Boys and Girls Club, to helping flood victims complete FEMA applications, to a runaway teen hotline, to a youth homeless shelter in Germantown, to the Northern Home for Children in Manayunk...community service gives me awesome personal satisfaction.

I have met so many like-minded people and beautiful souls through my years involved in various community service programs.  The experiences are priceless, the encounters numerous, the relationships irreplaceable.

Currently I am registered with Greater Philadelphia Cares.  This organization is involved in various programs all over Philadelphia - youth, inmate, elderly, immigration, athletics, arts & crats, etc.  Once registered they will send you a newsletter and email updates for upcoming events.  You contact the assigned project leader for the project you are interested in participating in, you show up, there - you volunteered.  It's THAT easy.  And so worth it.

Tayyib Smith, one of the founders of two.one.five magazine and the COO/founder of Little Giant Media Inc., contacted me a few weeks ago about a project he was involved with and interested in.  It's a great cause.  I wanted to use my small voice and my blogging abilities to spread the word and share with you all what is going down and how you can help out and be a part of it.

The project is called United We Serve.

Per Tayyib, here is the plan:

The primary initiative of United We Serve is to “expand the impact of existing organizations by engaging new volunteers in their work and encourage volunteers to develop their own “do-it-yourself” projects”. In order to contribute to this initiative, video vignettes highlighting individuals and organizations that are making positive impacts in the Philadelphia region will be composed and distributed to various viral media outlets. Every day starting on September 1st and ending on the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance, an individual or organization will be highlighted. Each subject will be asked a series of three over-arching questions: 1) Why do you volunteer? 2) How has service brought about change in your life and the community? 3) How can someone get involved in your service project? This series will bring to light those that are agents of change in the Philadelphia area and inspire others to do the same in the region and throughout the country.

tayyib@215mag.com

Please contact Tayyib above if you have anything to contribute - if not your time, then your ideas, your exposure, your influence on others to expose this initiative and generate interest in community service and giving back to the communities we live in.

We elected a community organizer and very involved community servant in Barack Obama this year, folks.  It's time for everyone to do their part and get involved.  Don't talk about it, be about it.  You might be surprised at who you meet, what you know, what you learn and where you end up.

introducing: BLASTFOR METV.NET ft. Writtenhouse

Tuesday 06.30.09

I mentioned this upcoming project in previous blog posts. I was privileged to accompany my homies @BlastOffBe and @aamin1 of A2 Productions to the lab to interview Philly's own, Writtenhouse...

B4MTv is Music - Fashion - Life ... Where Entertainment Meets Real Life.

Check out my boy, @BlastOffBe - his show/blog/website is dope. I co-sign. I am honored to have been a part of this special project. THANK YOU A & B...I saw my blog link on the page, that's D.O.P.E. I hope to be a part of future B4MeTv episodes & when I do, y'all will know. It will all be here.

I don't blog about strictly hip hop, this is not a music blog...this is my everyday thoughts, happenings, what's on my mind space. I blog about artists & groups I dig, talented musicians and emcees who don't get the shine & recognition I feel they deserve. It might not be your style or your scene, but it's mine. "And I like it..." (c) Grand Puba

Special thanks to DAME and @Muhammadas for making this possible and to the fellas ~ Kush, Chris*, CK & Sleeves ~ for taking their time out to reflect and share their thoughts and ideas w/ us. These are genuine, talented, humble dudes who earned their 'shine' - you can get their latest release Sunshine Philadelphia Vol. 2 HERE - for FREE! It's on my iPod in heavy rotation... before anyone asks - my fave song is "Give Em What They Want", it's #12. I'd pay for this. So would you.

*Chris does talk in the 3rd B4MTv episode, I promise. He doesn't say much, but when he does...pay attention. He doesn't have Twitter, otherwise I'd have it linked on blog :( The 3rd episode is also my personal favorite - they talk dream collabos/world tours & shout-outs...holla (7:33 mark, yeah that's us...)

Some flics I took before, during & after the interview: not sure why the slideshow looks cropped on blog, but if you click on actual slideshow/images, it will show them as they should appear. (work w/ the kid ;)

p.s. I forgot my umbrella ella ella eh eh eh in the studio...good thing I have SUNSHINE PHILADELPHIA!

RaNdOm ramblings...

~ I just finished a Scrabble game w/ my sis and two brother-in-laws. I lost, last place. Amatuers. None of them are college educated...goes to show you that: "Going to a college doesn't make you smart any more than going to a bank makes you rich." (c) Anonymous

~ My 13 year old niece is now obsessed w/ Michael Jackson (MJ). Her desktop background is of MJ, the wallpaper on her blackberry is MJ, my sis said she had been watching MJ videos on-demand, non-stop, back-to-back...I mean, it's deeper than MJ. The first thing she said when she saw me today was, "What was Michael Jackson like when you were 'little'?" I told her about my Thriller coat, watching MTV non-stop for the Thriller video and the Thriller cassette tape I begged my mom for. I asked her why she was feeling like this? What was the connection? She says: "Well what was it about MJ that you loved, TiTi?" Good point. Kids are smarter than we give them credit for. They have insight and forethought. I was not prepared for that coming from her. Next thing I know, I hear "PYT" blasting from the living room and she along w/ her 7 year old sister are singing along and dancing around...just wow. MJ crossed from my mom's generation through the Jackson 5 every Saturday AM while cleaning our rooms and doing chores, to Thriller tapes and zipper jackets, to my now 13 year old niece watching MJ videos on-demand. The more things change, the more they stay the same. MJ is a legend. His legacy doesn't end w/ us. Now that's dope.

~ I'm seriously considering getting my hair chopped tomorrow, AGAIN. I have an appt. @ my little sis' salon before we leave for vacation. Only 3 ppl in this world I trust to cut my hair...she is one of them. It has been in the phunky phase for what seems like forever now - not long enough for a true ponytail and not short enough to say it's 'short'. So I'm gonna change all that. Something that is easy to maintain, something that fits me, something different. I never got so many compliments on my hairstyle like I did when I first cut it short a year or so ago. I have had long hair my entire life, no bangs, one length, just LONG hair. It's not growing fast enough for me and I'm feeling like I need and want a big change. I will keep y'all updated on this one...

~ My baby bro (he's 10 years younger than me) is having his 1st child. I have mixed feelings about the situation, I'm excited, I'm anxious...his girl (I call her "Foxanne") text me yesterday and said they find out the sex of the baby on July 10th. I am soooooo hype. My bro told me on mother's day he loves the name "Oliva" for a girl...he said he remembers it from all of us watching "The Color Purple" and he loves the way is sounds. Of course we're all in agreement, except for Foxanne. There will be more on this situation, I'm sure, as the pregnancy progresses.

~ I'm watching "Intervention" on A&E in HD on-demand on my sis' huge, big-screen plasma TV. I don't even want to think about what something like this co$t - I dont' even have true furniture in my apt! - but hey, if you got it, do you. This episode is about twin girls w/ anorexia. I know this is a real issue and a real problem for some people, I'm not trying to make light of the disease...but how the HELL do you starve yourself when there is food in front of you and available to you? How the HELL do you exercise and play Wii fit dancing games burning calories you're not taking in? How the HELL do you see your ribs and say out loud, "I am fat."?! There are areas of the world and right here in our own backyards where people are starving every day and not by fucking choice! This is madness.

~ The Philly hip hop scene is so dope, so deep, overlooked and underrated. Networking & giggin' has opened my eyes and ears to a lot of people, sounds and scenarios...my senses are stunned. Writtenhouse - I co-sign.

~ New BlastForMe TV intro blog coming soon...I will be posting photos from the studio interview w/ Writtenhouse. *Follow* my homies on Twitter behind this project: @BlastOffBe (the host) and @aamin1, the genius behind A2 (A Squared) Productions. In the meantime, you can check out @zeekbutla interview...and *follow him* on Twitter as well.

~ I'm out of town right now, on my niece's laptop I gifted her for her birthday last year. It's a pink Dell, nothing fancy or crazy expensive, but this mofo is broken already - kids don't have jobs yet don't take care of shit! Ungrateful and disrespecting the dolla...mine gets stolen out of my suite in Jamaica...I work and I can't afford to replace my Mac yet...and she asks for an iPod Nano for her birthday this year. Yeah, exactly. I'm thinking the same thing. This little heffa is sassy...she might get it this weekend. Real talk. We'll see what she'll be receiving @ her birthday cookout/pool party next weekend. It won't be an iPod Nano, that's for GD certain. FOH

~ Aiight, I've been real seriously sarcastic & super sassy myself this week, PMS'in and stressin' about shit I have no control over...I needed this weekend away from the City, some family time, reflection...hope I'm over this hump when I get back to Philly on Sunday. So much to do, so little time.

!Ciao

Rock The Bells & Bee Eater Showcase 06.24.09

Budweiser and Rock The Bells had an audition @ 941Theater on Wednesday 06.24.09 to battle for the opening spot at the Rock The Bells concert. I went out to support my fab chica, Zarinah, and the homie Cymarshall Law. You can find Zarinah here on Twitter and MySpace.

Dice Raw hosted and he was not playing any games w/ the contestants. He is a tough critic and hard to impress. DJ Aura and I met up and attended...w/minimal transportation drama, but we made it nonetheless. Zarinah was on stage when we arrived, so we rushed in to catch the rest of her set.

Zarinah killed, Cy did his thing, alas some dude named "Big Worm" won (I think it was more for his dance and crowd hype than his lyrics alone) He scored 9's from all 3 judges, so his score of 27 won the battle.

After the battle at 941 we all headed to Silk City for the Bee Eater Showcase, hosted by Mars. Met Mars at the Jay $tay Paid Dilla Mixtape release party @ Johnny & Brenda's a few wks ago...what a small world we hip hop heads in Philly travel in.

I met and clicked w/ a lot of talented artists, musicians, rappers, etc. Here is a slideshow of some of the many photos I took that night. A dead battery is a serious FAIL when attempting to properly document an event, but I did my best w/ what I had.

Recording Cymarshall Law's entire performance was no good for my almost dead battery, but worth every minute of it. Plus the photographer drawin, he kept getting in the way, but it was all good. Check him out here in my YouTube video, he's also on Twitter and MySpace. Very talented rapper...keep your eyes and ears open for him.

SUPPORT talented musicians and REAL hip hop, folks. Get out & get involved.

Props to two.one.five mag for the heads up...it was great FINALLY meeting Tayyib. If you don't know who he is, you live under a rock. Follow him and check out his mag/his site. He is the hip hop/Philly night life guru. So glad I went out on a Wednesday...

Jesse Boykins III ~ "Tabloids"

Throwback...

I peeped this over on Briana Latrise's blog ~ I commented on her blog - AS ALL BLOG READERS SHOULD - told her I was stealing sharing w/ y'all. Hot guy, hot song...I'll be on the look-out for more from his sexy self...

Never heard the song or even heard of him before the blog blurb...but here is what I found out:

Jesse is a sexy R&B dude from Brooklyn via Chicago, Jamaica and Miami. His 1st album "Dopamine: My Life On My Back EP" was released in February '08 followed by "The Beauty Created LP" in November of the same year. He's on Twitter and the link above is his MS page.

His band is The Beauty Created:

  • Jamire Williams- Drums
  • Jeremy Most- Guitar & Bass

I co-sign.

Wayno's World Pt. I

So Wayno contacts me one night out of the blue...if you don't FOLLOW HIM on Twitter: Your Mama don't love you. He has MySpace too, so check him out if you do the MySpace thing.

I deleted my MySpace months ago (how I miss our Kobe debates, NOT!), we text randomly, we still have Twitter (FOH) and every now & then this ninja gets down here to Philly from Harlem.

Thus, Pt. I of ? (we're not sure yet) sessions I'm gonna photo/blog w/ Wayno. We have a lot in common, but ink began our bond so here we are. I had been blogging about ink ideas I have for my next piece (which you can check out here), so he gets at me all hype & excited about his next piece...now I'm all hype & geeked.

We had some time before the needle started buzzing, Leena was making the stencil for the ideas we were throwing at her about the whole concept of the piece - remember this is only Pt. I of possibly III-V sessions. Here we are in front of the studio for a little intro and retrospect...

THIS is why I fucks w/ dude. This is how & why me and Wayno became cool years ago. He's the sharpest knife in the drawer, believe that. Don't let the tats and the pretty boy Harlem shit fool you (did you see this man's Kobe sneaks?! LMFWAO) This is what real art & real ink is about. You don't just walk into a studio and pick something off the wall and say, "This is cute or this is dope! I want this!" No. You're doing it for the wrong reasons. Even in these modern medical days, for the most part your ink is w/ you forever. It's a commitment - my sleeve, a piece like this that Wayno is working on...you need to put thought into the attention and detail that is going to be on your body.

In case you're curious as to the J Cole "Dollar and a Dream" YouTube jawn Wayno referred to, here it is:

Big City Tattoo Studio ~ this is where it's all going down. BCT is located at: 2635 W. Girard Ave. (West Philly). You can find the lovely and talented Leena Ink there, it's her studio. Make sure you tell her "TiTi" & Wayno sent you if you're a new customer or heard of them from here. She's talented, she's been in Urban Ink and she puts in work. Check Leena out on MySpace, friend her, take a look @ her pics & get @ her if you're looking for some official ink. Leena gets busy & books up quick, but Todd & Casey ink there too and you can walk-in anytime after 12 noon.

Here is a slideshow of the flics I took while @ the studio w/ Wayno*:

*Disclaimer: There are descriptions on each flic, but in the slideshow you can only see the titles. "I'm not the Captain of the yacht but I'm on the boat..." (c) Beans. I'm still learning, folks...and as I get better the blog will get better. In the meantime, deal w/ my flaws and all criticisms must be made in the form of a compliment. Comments are appreciated. Please & thanks.

05.30.09
I am honored to be a part of this - thank YOU, Wayno...xoxo "Snow Ninja"

Comedy Show Follow-up...

I wish I could find that pic we took together that night - he hasn't changed a bit but I'd DIE if y'all saw the shirt I was wearing that night, lmfwao.

Tanya Morgan "BROOKLYNATI" Listening Party...

@MikeyMcFly and I met up and attended the @TanyaMorgan "Brooklynati" listening party this past Friday night (8 May 2009) at Fresh Melt Water. It was an interesting, crazy, hectic night...but we all pulled through and did the damn thing! Got to vibe w/ the group, their DJ, management...met a lot of cool people that night and hopefully we'll have the opportunity to do it again sometime...not to mention I put them on to one of the BEST cheesesteak spots in Philly - Larry's - and they all loved it!

Photobucket

Fresh Melt Water is a cool spot in Northern Liberties...if you've never been down there you gotta check it out. They used to sell their stuff through other local stores, and now they have their very own spot. Cute tees, khakis, button-ups...all kinds of cool clothes and dope stuff to offer here.

Mikey and I were wondering how much dinero it would cost to actually live down there. It's a business park/shopping plaza/apartment complex all in one. There were 2 huge outdoor screens in the Piazza, tables and benches, a stage...it was crazy clean and so cool. Most of the shops were closed, but I went across the street to an intimate martini bar on 2nd St. and had a strawberry/pomegranate martini before the band arrived... w/ a crazy chick named Angie (SHE is another whole blog in itself...another day, just not today, lol) I had met that night. On 2nd thought, considering discretion is a must and groupies are no fun if the homies can't have none, maybe I won't blog about her after all. I'm gonna confer w/ Mikey on this one.

After the listening party and chillin' @ my crib in West Philly for a minute (I have NEVER had so many people in my crib at once!), we all headed downtown to a Paper-Street party @ Time on 13th & Sansom. If you're not down w/ Paper-Street, you're not down w/ the right people. Tommy is Paper-Street and he has a website, Facebook, MySpace and he's on Twitter. Add him, follow him, get to know him...he throws some of the best parties in Philly and he's just a very down-to-earth cool person to know.

Anyhoo, "Brooklynati" drops this Tuesday, May 12th...make sure to grab a copy and support good music from some great guys! I got mine :) Signed, sealed and delivered...and check out the insert in the CD when you get that. These dudes are genius.

words to live by - real rap

The conditions by which we give love are never reason enough to ever stop loving someone: fever, passion, emotion...even why you like someone! They will all subside but continued joy is to know that someone exists in your world and you exist in theirs ...

I originally posted this on my prior blog Thursday August 9, 2007 - 12:00am (EDT) - which shall remain nameless at this time (so let's just call it "Batgirl Blog")...occasionally I will grab "old" material from there for what I deem to be pertinent purposes, lol. I blogged on there since 2000 up and until I created this one last year. I started it while in college, so I have years of material on there to sift through, and to protect the identitfy of the innocents, lol. I blogged there anonymously, no pic, no name, just a blog. It's no big secret and there's no real reason why I won't name it - except I guess to make a few people wonder, hmmmm....Anyways, this is where I blog now, this is where all my current material is, this is the blog that matters. Keep reading please. And I hope you joined the GET BACK ARMY! I did. This album BEEN dropped and if y'all didn't cop you're late! FAIL!

"Laura's Song"...by Don Cusack (aka Donwill, 1/3 of Tanya Morgan)

I know as women we'd all like to think there's a guy out there in our past that asks himself these questions and feels these same things Don Cusack (aka "Donwill") goes into in this song. This is a dope song w/ no hidden motives or intentions. As much as I hate to hear this...'IT IS WHAT IT IS!'

My name ain't Laura and I only know one. "Yeah it's about you, but no names though, I'm talkin' bout 'Laura' just to help me play it off..." It's shit like this that makes me smile and remember that there are good men out there, they're not all dogs...we're looking in the wrong places for the wrong thing ladies. But we all have the same goal: 'we tryin' to get chose' *cue "International Player's Anthem" here*

"Cause love is special. So you just might to have to fight for that somebody ... to have that somebody ... don't give up on love!" (c) Don Cusack

Check out Donwill's Blog...there's more there. He's also on Twitter, meaning FOLLOW HIM. And here's his MySpace too...
